All-America City 2004
Stockton Wins Its Second All America City Award ( Atlanta, GA) – The National Civic League has awarded the City of Stockton with the 2004 All America City award. Stockton is one of ten cities in the country to receive the award. Stockton was also a 1999 award winner. This is the second award for Mayor Gary Podesto. “ Stockton is really doing a lot to reinvent itself,” said Podesto. “These awards are a testament to the hard work our residents are doing to make their city a better place to live.” Each of the 30 cities vying for this year’s award made a presentation to 10 National Civic League judges about why they considered their city to be an All America City. Stockton’s presentation focused on what city founder Captain Charles Weber would see if he returned to present day Stockton. Titled, “The Dream Lives On!”, a 60 member delegation showed how Stockton has changed, and highlighted three community driven projects. Those projects were Community Partnership for Families, Downtown Alliance, and the Peace Keeper Program. The City of Stockton was the first to face the judges on Friday morning. Their performance and thorough answers to the judge’s questions left a strong impression with the judges. A lasting image was needed to make the judges remember Stockton’s qualities after watching 29 other contestants. “We stood a one in three chance of winning,” said City Manager Mark Lewis. “The weeks of rehearsal paid off, but when it came to facing the judges we just spoke from the heart. I believe that had a lasting affect.” “Absolutely amazing,” said Peggy Massey. “This is a rare opportunity that the entire community has to come together, and have the rest of the country stand up and take notice at what Stockton has to offer. Peggy Massey was also part of the 1999 delegation that brought home Stockton’s first AAC award. Massey, the Downtown Alliance Economic Development Director, wrote the portion of the application detailing the accomplishments of the Downtown Alliance. The Stockton delegation will return on Sunday, June 13. A community celebration
is being planned for all Stockton residents to take part in the City’s
win in Atlanta.
