City Council Vision Statement 2008
Stockton will be a vibrant, diverse city with a high percentage of educated and upwardly mobile citizens who are engaged in civic life. Stockton will increase its economic base and advance to the cutting edge of consuming and producing green technology. Stockton will be defined with a proactive philosophy where safety and quality of life are enhanced by our incorporation of technology at every level of service.
City Council Goals: 2007/2008
- Reduce crime and improve safety.
- Maintain open and thorough processes for monitoring the fiscal health of the City.
- Articulate a vision for the ongoing revitalization of downtown, the waterfront, and continued infrastructure, economic development, and redevelopment initiatives throughout the City.
- With regional sensitivity develop a vision for long-term growth for Stockton to provide for appropriate and viable development and economic growth.
- Evaluate the integration of technology into operations in the delivery of services.
- Develop a strategy to meet the diverse housing needs of the City.
Stockton City Council Facts:
- The first City Council was voted in office in 1850.
- The current form of government is that of City Manager-Council.
- The City Council is the governing body for the City of
Stockton.
- The Council consists of seven (7) members, six (6) Councilmembers
and the Mayor, each of whom have the right to vote on all
matters coming before the Council.
- The six (6) Councilmembers are nominated from districts,
and elected by the City at large.
- City Council meetings are held Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m.
in the Council Chambers of City Hall, 425. N. El Dorado
Street.
- City Council meetings are open to the public at City
Hall, or they can be viewed online.
Councilmember Requirements
- Must reside in and be a qualified elector (registered voter) of the
district from which nominated and elected, for a period of not
less than thirty (30) days prior to the filing of the nomination
papers.
- Must reside in the district during term of office. Any member
moving from said district during the term shall automatically
forfeit office.
- Shall not hold any other City office or City employment during the
term for which he or she is elected to the Council.
- Must declare under oath to accept the office in the event of
election, and to support and defend the Constitution of the
United States and of the State of California.

Term Limits
No more than two (2) terms as Mayor or Councilmember.
However, service prior to January 1, 1989 does not disqualify
any person for further service. |
