Human Resources Department
Employment Recruitment Process

Since the City of Stockton is covered by a Civil Service System, there are a number of steps that are necessary parts of the recruitment, testing and selection process. Listed below are the typical steps that may be included in the process, however, each recruitment is independent and may not include all steps listed.

Step 1
The Human Resources Department announces the vacancy by publishing a job announcement. Copies of the job announcement are available in the Human Resources Department

Step 2
The vacancy is advertised in a variety of media, including The Record (Stockton's daily newspaper). Information about current job openings may also be obtained by:

  • calling the City of Stockton Job Line at (209) 937-8523
  • watching the Stockton City Government TV cable channel 97.
  • accessing the jobs web page on this web site.

Step 3
Application materials may be picked up directly from the Human Resources Department, located at 22 E. Weber Avenue, Suite 150. You may also request applications by phone 209-937-8233, or download them from the job openings page on this website.

Step 4
Applications should be typed or written neatly, with black ink. All questions should be answered. If a particular question does not apply to you, indicate "not applicable." Do not indicate "see resume" for any information requested on the application.

Step 5
Applications may be returned in person or mailed to the Human Resources Department. Faxed applications are not acceptable. It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure the application reaches the Human Resources Department by 5:00 p.m. on the final filing date.

Step 6
Applications are reviewed to determine which candidates, based on their education, experience, and background best fit the needs of the City of Stockton at that time. Those applicants deemed best qualified for the position in question will be invited by mail to participate in the examination process.

Step 7
The examination process may include one or more of the following types of examinations:
  • Written
    • Typically multiple choice or true/false questions

  • Oral Examination
  • An interview with a panel of 2 - 3 individuals knowledgeable about the job being filled

  • Performance Examination
    • Hands-on demonstration of a candidate's ability to perform certain tasks, such as typing, driving a vehicle, welding, etc.

  • Assessment Center
    • A series of different tests designed to determine the candidate's ability to perform certain duties. These are typically used for management level positions.
